Robert Galtman, Pomona: An abusive boyfriend triggers a massive multi-valley highway chase after allegedly executing two people in a local apartment hallway.
A 48-year-old Pomona resident named Robert Galtman is behind bars after a shocking double murder. Galtman was involved in a rocky, two-year relationship with a much younger woman. On Thursday afternoon, that relationship ended in a horrific outburst of deadly gun violence.
The trouble started just before 3:30 p.m. at an apartment building on East Monterey Avenue. Neighbors heard loud gunshots echoing through the building near Garey Avenue. Someone quickly called 911 to report the gunfire. When local police officers arrived, they discovered a grim scene in a common hallway.
Inside the hallway, police found 24-year-old Veronica Lopez and her acquaintance, Richard Brady. Both were suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators quickly tied Galtman to the double shooting. Relatives of the female victim confirmed that Galtman was her abusive boyfriend.
Immediately after the shots were fired, Galtman took off from the apartment complex. He jumped behind the wheel of a black Kia sedan and hit the gas. His escape attempt triggered an intense, hours-long pursuit across Southern California. The California Highway Patrol took the lead as the suspect fled.
The high-speed pursuit stretched through Pomona and straight into the San Fernando Valley. Galtman kept driving wildly through the Santa Clarita Valley and up into the Antelope Valley. Police tracked the black sedan across multiple counties as the suspect refused to pull over.
The dramatic highway chase finally ended around 7 p.m. in the desert area. Officers threw down spike strips to pop the Kia's tires. Then, a patrol vehicle executed a perfect PIT maneuver to force the car to a spin. Galtman surrendered to the surrounding officers and was taken into custody.
Galtman now faces heavy criminal charges for the deaths of Lopez and Brady. He is currently locked up ahead of his formal arraignment in a Pomona court. A judge set his bail at a staggering $3.1 million. Detectives are still working to piece together the final details of the case.
While Galtman awaits his day in court, the victims' loved ones are left dealing with the tragedy. The families have set up online donation pages to cover memorial costs and support Brady's kids. Veronica's family hopes this terrible event warns other people to escape domestic abuse before it turns fatal.
