Benson Brady, Claiborne: Tragic truck wreck against a roadside tree instantly takes the lives of two buckled-up young passengers."
State troopers are hard at work trying to piece together a devastating weekend crash that took two young lives. A routine drive turned into an absolute disaster on a local highway, leaving a community searching for answers. The police are looking at every angle to see why a vehicle suddenly lost control.
The wreck happened on Saturday morning at about 11:35 a.m. out in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. It all unfolded on Louisiana Highway 9 close to where it meets Louisiana Highway 518. The sudden crash completely shut down the area as emergency crews rushed to help.
A 2022 Ram pickup truck was heading southbound along the highway right before the incident. Investigators say the truck suddenly left the roadway for an unknown reason. It went off the path and collided violently with a large tree along the shoulder.
Tragically, 14-year-old Benson Brady from Kentwood and 22-year-old Katie Barber from Tylertown, Mississippi, lost their lives. Both teens were riding as passengers in the truck when it hit the tree. Emergency personnel arrived quickly but pronounced them dead at the crash site.
The person driving the Ram and two other passengers survived the terrible impact. They ended up with moderate injuries and needed immediate medical attention. Ambulances transported all three of them to a local hospital where they are expected to stay and recover.
Louisiana State Police Troop G handles the ongoing investigation into the crash. The troopers stated that they do not believe driver impairment was a factor in the accident. However, they still collected standard toxicology samples for analysis to follow standard police protocols.
Crash reconstruction experts are currently checking the road conditions and vehicle speed to find out what went wrong. Meanwhile, the families of Benson and Katie are left dealing with an unimaginable void. Neighbors and friends are coming together to support them through this awful time.
